Scientists have recently uncovered a link between hormonal imbalances and women who remain detached or cheat on their significant others. According to an article in New Scientist, women studied who had admitted to being unfaithful or detached sexually, were found to have unusually high levels of estrogen in their reproductive systems. The hormone is also linked to high sex drives and high levels of fertility in the same women. The higher levels could explain the desire to sleep around or “trade up” with different men when others are settling down around them.

Attractiveness. According to New Scientist, the rise in natural estrogen levels in women with this infliction, also leads to an inflated level of self-appreciation and ego. They are “more prone to hop from man to man… cheat on their current partner… and see themselves as more attractive than other women,” New Scientist writes.
Love ‘Em and Leave ‘Em. “These women are willing to trade up when the opportunity arises and continue to extract these lucrative resources from men when they can,” explains psychologist Kristina Durante of the University of Texas in Austin who headed up the research experiment.

Covering Their Needs. According to Durante, these women with higher levels of estrogen in their systems are merely acting on instinctive behaviors to provide themselves with the best possible suitor. She claims it is all about making sure their needs are met in terms of offering the best scenario for childbirth and raising children.

All About the Resources. “For women, it’s all about the resources that we need. If you’re going to be getting knocked up there’s a significant cost,” Durante says. Because of this “cost,” Durante says women with higher levels of estrogen are more apt to “trade-up” if the opportunity presents itself.
Level of Attraction. On the flip side, not only does the higher level of estrogen make these women believe they are more attractive to prospective mates, it actually proves to be at least somewhat true. Durante’s research found that the same women were perceived as more attractive by the men around them than other women in the same vicinity.

Previous Research. “Previous research has shown that women who produce high levels of an estrogen hormone called oestradiol are perceived as more attractive and mother more children than women with lower amounts of the sex hormone,” New Scientist explains.

The Attractiveness Factor. It is widely known that women’s hormone levels fluctuate throughout their monthly cycle. Because of this, there were obviously certain times in which the effects were expected to be greater than others. To find this out, Durante set up the study with baseline readings first.
The Baseline Readings. “To rule out the effect of these monthly fluctuations, Durante and colleague Norman Li measured the hormone in 52 female university students at two points in the cycle, representing a woman’s baseline level of the hormone,” New Scientist explains.

Self-Ratings and Surveys. As part of the experiment, Durante asked her participants to answer a questionnaire that would gauge their probability for participating in multiple partners, shorter relationships, and infidelity. It also took a look at the way they viewed themselves and rated their own level of attractiveness.

Higher Self-Attractiveness. “High oestradiol levels corresponded to higher self-attractiveness ratings. As independent confirmation, a panel of two men and seven women also judged them the prettiest,” reports New Scientist. The higher levels proved to make women more attractive to both themselves and others in the room.
No One-Night Stands. Despite the higher sexual attractiveness and the higher probability for infidelity, the women with raised estrogen levels did not show any increased rate of one-night stands than women with lower rates. The hormone levels therefore, proved to only influence long-term “betterment” of their relationship status, not sexual satisfaction.

More Willing to Cheat. “High oestradiol women reported that they had dated more men and were more willing to cheat, from innocent flirts to serious affairs. These women, however, proved no more interested in one-night stands than women with lower levels of oestradiol,” writes New Scientist.

Modern Women. According to Durante, the behavior associated with the hormone fluctuations in women is partly supplemented by the change in dependency needs in today’s society. “Most modern women rely less on male support for food, shelter, and other resources,” Durante says.
Best Situation Possible. Above all, researchers believe the hormone levels are behind the innate desire to present themselves and their offspring with the greatest possible opportunities. It’s this desire that leads them to search for the “new improved model.”
Going for the Best Commitment. “Highly attractive women can get the Brad Pitts to be long-term partners, not just the one-night stand,” Durante explains. The study aims to take another look in a few years to see if the results ring true again in older age.
