Sure, she might look cute in that little cotton dress you got her, but you shouldn’t stop her from playing in the mud just because you don’t want to have to get the stains out later. A child is discovering everything for the first time, and if you tell her not to do things because you don’t want her to get her dress dirty, you’re teaching her that the appearance of her dress is more important than that groundbreaking discovery she was about to make. Here are the subtle ways we teach our little girls that being beautiful is more important than being smart.
What are some subtle ways you think we’re teaching our girls that beauty is more important than mind? Tell us in the comments!
When you stop her from discovering something new because you don’t want her to ruin her dress.
When you tell her never to touch machinery with no reasoning instead of telling her what they’re there for and why they can be dangerous.
Unlike boys who tend to get toy power tools all their lives.
When you constantly call her cute, dainty, or pretty, instead of smart, strong, or creative.
People tend to call little girls pretty rather than smart all the time and scientists suspect that it’s effecting how these girls grow up.
Girls who are told to be more “lady like” when playing in the dirt or exploring a creek, or things of that nature, tend to grow up thinking that subjects like biology and engineering are only career paths for men.
In fact, 66% of 4th grade girls say their favorite subjects are science and math, but only 18% of college engineering majors are female.
When you try to have a bonding time with your daughter and you take her shopping, instead of seeing what she might have wanted to do instead.
When she talks about a friend she made who’s a boy and you immediately start to tease her for having a boyfriend.
When you talk to her about school you ask her about who she has a crush on, rather than what she’s learning in class.
When you buy everything for her in the color pink before she even knew the names of the colors.
When you take her shopping and only let her shop in the “girls” section.
